The dance of the planets, Sun, and Moon around our earth represents a
huge and incredibly subtle clock. How do we tell time? Before the invention
of clocks we depended on the daily cycle of the Sun to determine day and
night. Months were tied to the cycle of the Moon. Seasons are measured as
the Sun moves across the ecliptic past the starry constellations.
In a single year, the Sun will move through all twelve signs of the zodiac,
but the same period of time gives us thirteen lunar months. Our daily lives
are measured by this dance between our two most visible planets. Our life
clocks are set by the position of the planets at our births.
The cosmic clock is even more subtle when we include the patterns of
all the known planets. When we consider that Mercury circles the Sun three
times a year, and Venus faster than once a year we start to get a bigger
picture. Mayans linked their whole astronomical system to the 52-year great-cycle
of Venus. It takes Mars an average two years to circle the twelve signs,
Jupiter takes twelve years, Saturn 28 years, Chiron is 51 years to make
the circuit, Uranus 84 years, Neptune about 173, and Pluto takes 248 years
to encircle the zodiac.
When you put these cycles together you have a lot of clocks going at
once. Saturn, for example, is the clock regulating responsibility, judgement,
hard work, and maturity. Uranus measures excitement, unpredictability, new
ideas, and freedom. Mars is the clock of aggression, assertiveness, militance.
When an astrologer looks at the planetary patterns, she is looking at the
cosmic clock, and can say Its TIME for this to happen.
But must it happen? Does the Suns arrival on the eastern horizon
force you to wake up? Do you always go to sleep when it sets? Not necessarily.
Just as we have developed alternative lighting systems to compensate for
the obvious clock of the Sun, we can develop alternative systems for events
associated with other cosmic clocks. But if we arent aware of the
ticking of these clocks, how can we compensate?
Combining the profound psychological and spiritual insights of modern western astrology with the powerful planetary remedy systems of ancient Indian astrology, there are many ways to improve our lives with astrological knowledge. It simply depends on knowing how to live with your cycles.
The eclipses of the summer of 1999 promise to be strong harbingers of
change, and astrologers are watching closely. Every year there are at least
two eclipses of the Sun and two eclipses of the Moon. Unless the eclipse
is close to total, most people arent aware of it. In a solar eclipse,
we have the lunar principle (intuitive, subconscious, irrational) eclipsing
the solar principle (conscious, rational, egoic). It hides rational, conscious
decision-making in favor of emotional or intuitive reactions. A lunar eclipse
brings rational or ego issues to the forefront. Eclipse effects are most
active during the two weeks before and after the actual eclipse.
The lunar eclipse of July 28, 1999, (4 58 Aquarius) will echo the degrees
activated on the April 20th school shootings. The eclipse point and four
other planets will be very close to Aprils active planets at 5 degrees
of fixed signs. Look for major follow-up stories dealing with gun-control
or court issues following Aprils tragedy. If you have planets near
these degrees you may be making decisions related to your April experiences.
On August 11, 1999, there will be an important total eclipse of the Sun.
This eclipse will be at 18 Leo. At the same time there will a repeat of
Aprils Mars/Saturn opposition, this time at 16 Scorpio/Taurus, activating
the eclipse point, and Uranus will fill in the grand cross in fixed signs
at nearly 15 Aquarius. If you have planets in your chart at 14-19 of fixed
signs, look ahead now to see what changes are in store for you!
The nature of this eclipse is given by astrologer Bernadette Brady as
Unexpected events involving friends or groups place a great deal of
pressure on personal relationships. These relationship issues may loom large
as the eclipse affects the chart. The individual would be wise not to make
any hasty decisions since information is distorted and possibly false.
This is not the time to act impulsively.
In the world, we can expect sudden action that will surprise everyone and may initially seem quite shocking. As sudden as this action will be, it will not be long-lasting. The unstable energy of the Mars/Saturn/Uranus/Eclipse grand square in FIXED signs represents a release of long-pent-up energy. When it is released, theres no going back. So hang on, and plan ahead!
Jyotish means the science of light, and what a remarkable
science of astrological enlightenment it is. Jyotish has a tradition dating
back nearly 6,000 years. While the Jyotish sidereal zodiac is almost a whole
sign different from Western astrology, dont let that bother you. Jyotish
considers the Moon and Ascendant far more important than the Sun.
One of the two most exciting features of Jyotish is its ability to time
events in your life. Depending on the position of your Moon at birth, your
life will begin under the major influence of one of nine planets (seven
traditional planets plus the two nodes of the moon). Then, in a fixed sequence,
these planets take turns being the major influencers of events in your life.
Using this system of lifetime-lordships (the Dasa System), we can fairly
quickly get an overview of the types of events you will experience in different
segments of your life.
Some people complain that Jyotish is too fated. In the battle of Fate
vs. Free Will, Jyotish often seems to emphasize the side of Fate. Strictly
speaking, Jyotish simply recognizes that, while there are a few things in
life that are definitely fated, there are great degrees of variation
and choice, and many of our actions and attitudes can change our experience
of life.
This leads to the second exciting feature of Jyotish. Because this ancient tradition has worked with energy patterns for millennia, they have also developed effective remedies for difficult situations. I cant explain or understand how these remedies work, but I (and many of you) have experienced near-miraculous changes by using gemstones, mantras, special ceremonies honoring planetary energies, and specific exercises performed on a weekly basis to help balance specific energies affecting us. If youre facing intractable problems, be sure to ask me about these the next time we talk!
As we live through the last year of the century, it is important to remember
that the millennium isnt at all an astrological phenomenon.
However, 1999 is an extremely active year from an astrological perspective.
The eclipses of this summer are only a part of the perspective.
All year we are experiencing an on-again, off-again opposition between
Mars and Saturn. Mars is the principle of aggression: Mars/Aries in mythology
was a character known for jumping into fights without thinking or strategy.
Mars is the principle of unalloyed ACTION. Saturn is the principle of STOP
EVERYTHING. The effect feels like trying to get somewhere in your car with
the gas pedal to the floor and someone else standing on the brake. This
opposition was exact on April 20th and the theme will repeat with the eclipses
of July and August. Dont be surprised by emotional revisiting of the
traumatic events of April and May.
Many events of this year are echoing World War II: The ethnic cleansing
in the Balkans, with horrific tales of massacres, camps, brutality; the
April 20th school shooting on Hitlers birthday. Even the tornadoes
of May bring the refugee situation home to Americans as thousands of middle-class
Americans leave the rubble of their homes.
I wondered why we were getting these WW2 echoes, and discovered the answer
is in the Chiron/Pluto cycle. In July, 1941, we had our last Chiron/Pluto
conjunction. Although the buildup had been going on for a while, this year
WW2 really began in earnest. On the date of the conjunction at 3 Leo, Germany
invaded Russia. The Sabian Symbol for 3 Leo is: A formally dressed
elderly man stands near trophies he brought back from a hunting expedition.
The masculine will to conquer ... and to impress his peers with his skill
in performing the ancient traditional power rituals. It reminds me
of Hitlers obsession with conquest, genocide, and occult power formulae.
The opening Chiron/Pluto square of Nov. 47 corresponds to the partitioning
of Europe and the beginning of the Cold War. The opposition in this cycle
began with the Bay of Pigs invasion and recurred on the exact date of the
Cuban Missile crisis on 10/22/62, and again on the exact date the Beatles
played the Ed Sullivan Show on 2/16/64 (the British Invasionare
we learning?) The closing square, representing resolution, was in summer
of 1993when the Balkan states were reshuffling their identities after
being released from Soviet dominance since 1947.
On December 31, 1999 we have another exact Chiron Pluto conjunction at 11 25 Sagittarius. Butlisten to its very different Sabian Symbol: A flag turns into an eagle; the eagle into a chanticleer saluting the dawn. The spiritualization and promotion of great symbols of a New Age by minds sensitive to its precursory manifestations. Urges us to bring our noblest ideals to actual life through the power of spiritual will. Doesnt this sound like transcending nationalism through an awakening global spirituality? I think we can see this as a great harbinger for the new millennium!
Are you in a relationship? Are you looking for one? Have you talked to
me about it? By using both western astrology and Jyotish, the astrology
of India, I can offer a lot of insights into the dynamics of existing relationships
and the timing of relationships in general. What kind of insights? you ask
.
Well, let me give you some examples.
Several years ago a woman came to me with a worried question about the
man who was courting her. She had been single for a long time, and this
man was very recently widowed. She was afraid he was on an emotional rebound
and didnt want to be overly optimistic for the long-term. I looked
at his chart, looked at her chart, and looked at their charts together.
They were fabulous. Cycles indicated this man had done his grieving long
before his wife died and was serious about this new relationship. Not only
did he want to take care of her, to make sure she was financially comfortable
and make her happy: He actually wanted to marry her.
My client felt sure marriage was not part of her friends plans,
so we examined their Indian charts to see. Within just a few months they
would simultaneously be in strong marriage cycles. It was beginning to look
pretty serious to me. I gave her my estimate of dates., all within less
than six months. She left the consultation excited about the relationship,
but skeptical about the marriage prediction. About three months later, I
was invited to their wedding reception!
Not all stories have such happy endings. Another couple came to me, charming
and very much in love. While their relationship was geared to highlighting
and healing old wounds, their charts were set up to set off each others
insecurities and defensiveness. They are always accidentally hurting each
other. Theyre married, but its terribly difficult.
When youre first getting to know someone, a relationship analysis is a good way to check out the potential for happiness and any possible pitfalls of a relationship. It can also help two people understand their different points of view and learn to communicate more effectively with each other. Each person who enters our lives is our teacher. Wouldnt it be helpful to know what to expect?

There is someone who is always ...constant, opening his arms to embrace youthe greatest friend within. To establish this friendship, you have to be aware of that friend, aware that you have a friend within. You are taught: Be good, be nice, be gentle, be loving. You have all been taught that, but you should learn to practice, understand, and to apply that knowledge to yourself.
